In a recent article by the BBC, Millions of young Britons are heading for an impoverished old age, far worse than their parents, experts tell BBC News, tells a story of the decline in financial security facing young people in Britain due to a decline in the availability of jobs that provide a pension benefit sufficient to live beyond the poverty level in the UK. A similar pattern is emerging in the US where not only are the number of jobs that proivde pensions declining from 38% in 1980 to 21% 1997, but major corporations are walking away from their pension liabilities leaving both retired and retiring workers with far less income than was expected. If anyone is wondering why the President’s proposal to change the rules of Social Security has not received a warm welcome it is because the nation’s retirees are feeling insecure.
